Investigations into the human mind led me to the creation of six large masks, each of which represents a characteristic state of mind. The occasion was a play I created together with five other poets,in which it was important that the mask icon would lead the audience to an understanding of the different characters who appeared on stage with rather ambiguous texts, ranging from the tragic to the sarcastic and the melancholic.

Behind people’s faces, their depths. The face is sometimes the impenetrable, misleading mask; lies can be hidden behindthe face. At other times, the face strongly expresses the mood of the moment, and the person is exposed to the other’s view. We read facesin order to understand what the words don’t say. But it is a game of expression, readability and interpretation. We are less and less capable: we are taught not to display, and too many intersecting needs create the filter, the deception. Or else the face declares itself, but the onlooker has forgotten, s/he cannot read the shadows and betrays emotions.
