Ecce homo

Moscow, Museum of Modern Art, Russian Academy of Fine Arts

2010

Angela Madesani

Fausta Squatriti’s Russian exhibition is not only an important and significant occasion in itself, more than ten years of her work is on show. A profound intellectual and existential reflection. The Italian artist examines the meaning of things, her life, and being an artist today. The exhibition presents the mature work of a unique personality on the Italian art scene: artist, graphic artist, poet, writer and organiser of events. Squatriti is many things at the same time. An all-round intellectual, who with sophistication and intelligence uses different media and different techniques, depending on her theoretical objectives. [...] The work in the exhibition is a statement about what is going on. An account without filters, without mitigation, by a profound and intelligent artist. Work that contains all the components of her research: techniques, geometry and symbolism, presented in a multimedia approach that includes photography, sculpture and painting. [...]

Ecce Homo [...] is an acknowledgment of the natural human condition. Here, too, are composite installations, which include small iron and glass boxes, reliquaries of her personal memory but also of a collective memory that must be preservedat all costs. Here, too, the work is based on an existential matrix: images of the mentally ill, an anorexic woman, apathetic monkey subjected to vivisection. Man, a marvellous creature able to create, invent, write music and poetry, paint and sculpt, is also violent and domineering, a wild beast towards those whom he believes areweaker than himself. [...]  Man, agreat creator, a brilliant artist and inventor, is also capable of torturing a defenceless creature to death.

Squatriti offers us undiluted slices of life whichare most of the time unpleasant. Who among us is prepared to look and recognisethat what we seeis not fiction? It is a highly symbolic work.

Ascolta il tuo cuore, città/City, listen to your heart             Assab One, Milano

October - November 2011

What is the purpose in comparing FaustaSquatriti’s 1960s Pop Art sculptures with the cycle of works Ascolta il tuo cuore, città, apparently so distant in terms of time, themes, materials and figurative combinations?

The reason is revealed by conducting a critical assessment of her work and discovering a coherence, not so much of style, which is often elaborated and amended, but of the actual concept of creativity in searchofthe appropriate form in which to express itself, time and again overthe course of years.Years in which Squatriti’s human experience has altered, and with it herawareness, thus leading her to create various languages without ever wearily repeating herself. Energy, the inclination towards what is unnatural orillogical, disequilibrium and the juxtaposition of opposites, are elements found in all her work. They provide the link between the colourful sculptures of the 1960s and the much more dramatic work of 2011, brought together in a compendium and comparison in the exhibition at Assab One.

Conosci te stesso/Know thyself

Galleria d'arte moderna Paolo e Adele Giannoni, Broletto di Novara

Paolo and Adele Giannoni Gallery of Modern Art, Broletto di Novara

September - October 2012

Conosci te stesso/Know thyself / Γνῶθισεαυτόν constituted a journey into interiority via the works of Fausta Squatriti. The exhibition was held in conjunction with the psychiatry conference The Subterranean Depths of the Mind and proposed as a reflection on our innermost life and the depths of the mind, where the most conflicting feelings coexist and where Man laboriously seeks the meaning of his existence. The exhibition was divided into three different cycles of work, created between 2005 and 2012. The show, located within the Giannoni Gallery’s nineteenth-century collection, juxtaposes two different ways of approaching the interior world with its fragility and strength. Without disturbing the museum collection, space was made for Squatriti’s mixed-media works, with the aim of encouraging the viewer to become an active interpreter of what s/he sees by comparing twovery different, yet in some respects very similar, expressive worlds.
